Osakis siblings advance in pedal pull

A little competition goes a long way for an Osakis family, with both children taking top finishes in the state pedal pull contest and the younger sibling earning a place at nationals.

Riley Mounsdon, 9, and Averie Mounsdon, 5, each earned first place in their age groups in events at Miltona Days and the Stearns County Fair. At the Douglas County Fair in Alexandria they brought home the same prize again with each earning 3rd place.

The three pedal events were sponsored by Brad and Theresa Schmidt of Schmidt Pullers.

From those successes, they both qualified for state where Riley competed in boys age 9 division and pulled a 17.7 ft pull to take 9th in state.

“State was tough for them because they had some tough competitors,” according to their parents, Jason and Carrie Mounsdon. “Averie and Riley really love it.”

Averie competed in the girls age 5 division and had 2 full pulls before she pulled 27.8 ft pull on her 3rd try and won 1st place at state and earned a trip to National Pulls.

This is a back-to-back win for Averie as she was the state champion in the 4 year old division in 2008 and took 9th in nationals. Because she will turn 6 prior to nationals, she will be competing in the 6 year old age division at that event.

The national competition takes place September 26 in Mitchell, SD.
