Letter - You might think you're safe, but you're not

Last week the Republican majority voted yes on a bill that would increase taxes on 300,000 Minnesotans who earn less than $55,000 per year by cutting the renters’ credit. Now, you may be saying to yourself, so what?

To the editor:

There is something about the political landscape that continues to baffle me, that is, as a party, the Republicans very often talk about family values, religious values, etc., and yet, when it comes to legislating, they legislate in a cruel fashion. They place the burden on the “least of us.”

Last week the Republican majority voted yes on a bill that would increase taxes on 300,000 Minnesotans who earn less than $55,000 per year by cutting the renters’ credit. Now, you may be saying to yourself, so what? I own my home. I would say to you that you might think that you are “safe,” but you are not. This is simply one more move toward the “giveaways” to a few corporations.

In the words of Pastor Martin Niemoller: First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Today, they have come for the renters, and tomorrow?
