Osakis boys golf to the top

The Silverstreaks lead the CMC this golf season

After finishing fourth in the Central Minnesota Conference standings last year and surging to the Section 5A-North title at the end of the season, the Osakis boys’ golf team was poised for bigger things.

The Silverstreaks are making a statement in 2012, leading the conference behind the veteran play of four seniors – Troy Asseln, Zac Stien, Seth Strelow and Nathan Arens – as well as junior Paul Hartmann.

The Silverstreaks have come in first in four of their five outings this year, and that nucleus of players has garnered medalist honors for Hartmann twice and Asseln once.

After the CMC meet at Pierz last Tuesday, the Silverstreaks, who tied with Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Pierz for team title honors, owned a four-stroke advantage in the league standings over Rockford.

LP-GE DUAL

Hartmann’s medalist score of 44 helped Osakis to a seven-stroke victory over the Thunder in the season’s opener at Long Prairie, despite the tough weather.

Joey Garcia and Troy Asseln added rounds of 47 and 49 in the victory.

CMC AT KIMBALL

Starting the conference season off the right way, Osakis grabbed a five-stroke victory over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

Asseln and Nathan Arens contributed 47s in the victory.

Osakis finished 11th in a strong field of 17 teams at the Benson Invitational last Wednesday as Hartmann shot a round of 89 to lead the team, while Strelow added a round of 92.

LP-GE INVITATIONAL

Osakis’ Zach Stien had a career-best score of 85, leading the Silverstreaks to a third place finish in an eight-team field at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle last Friday.

Asseln added a 93 as the Silverstreaks tallied a total of 365, just 23 strokes off the leaders.

Osakis was to have been at Maple Lake yesterday, Tuesday, and will be at Melrose on May 10.
