Ottertail Central won both the boys’ and girls’ team titles at the Osakis Lions Invitational track and field meet Thursday, with the Silverstreaks coming in third and fourth, respectively.

On Tuesday, Osakis competed at the Thunder Relays in Long Prairie, with the girls’ team tying for second and the boys finishing eighth.

OSAKIS LIONS

Brian Thorstad, Trey Erie, Hunter Johnson and Seth Newman ran a 1:42.50 to capture first place in the 4x200 relay for Osakis in their home invitational Thursday.

The 4x800 relay team of Nick Sunder, Grant Backes, Brett Cowdery and Devon Horvath-Nelson finished second.

The Silverstreak boys also got a third place from Horvath-Nelson in the 1,600-meter run, a fourth place finish from Thorstad in the 100-meter dash, fourth place from the 4x400 relay team of Preston Grahm, Johnson, Ryan Engfer and Horvath-Nelson, fourth from Garret Scherr in the discus and fourth from Mitch Sunder in the shot put.

“Our boys’ 4x100 dropped the baton on an exchange, but were able to pick it up and finish the race,” said head coach Lee VanNyhuis of the squad’s fifth place finish. “It was a good learning experience.”

“Brian [Thorstad] ran a good 100,” he added. “You can tell he is getting more comfortable with the race.”

The girls had first place finishes from Taylor Spychalla in the 1,600-meter run, Paige Gabrielson in the 3,200-meter run, the 4x100 relay team of Ashley Kraemer, Abby Stroup, Alli Scherr and Brittney Sadlemyer, and the 4x800 relay team of Spychalla, Courtny Walter, Isabelle Szech and Alexa Hoffarth.

“Taylor [Kraemer] had three solid sprints today,” said VanNyhuis.

“Senior Cathryn Wier didn’t place, but took a ton of time off in her 800,” he added.

“Some of the girls focused more on field events today because of the Elite Meet. We had some good performances in the horizontal jumps and throws.

“Taylor Spychalla ran well in the 1600,” said VanNyhuis. “She set the pace and had a nice kick down the homestretch. Paige [Gabrielson] and Isabelle [Szech] also took control of the 3200 from the gun to the tape.

“Alexa (Hoffarth) ran a great anchor in the 4x800. She had to sprint the last 300 meters to catch the leaders. She refused to let her team get beat.

“We appreciate all of the help from the volunteers,” noted the coach. “Without the help, we couldn’t have had such a smooth running meet.”

THUNDER RELAYS

“It was good to compete against some of the teams that we’ll face in our conference and True Team section meets,” said VanNyhuis of the meet at Long Prairie.

The Osakis girls’ 4x200 and 4x400 relays earned first place finishes, while the boys were led by Nick Sunders’ second place in the 3,200-meter run.
