Fire destroyed two cabins and a garage Saturday night and fortunately, everyone escaped the blaze.

According to Osakis Fire Chief Chad Mathews, the department was called to a structure fire at 2651 Lake Street in Osakis at 11:22 p.m. on Saturday, June 9.

While firefighters were en route, an Osakis police officer arrived at the scene and radioed to fire crews that a cabin and garage were fully engulfed in flames, but everyone had escaped.

Mathews said by the time their trucks arrived, a second cabin to the north was also consumed by fire with flames coming out of every door and window of the house.

Five people were sent to Douglas County Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, the chief said.

Osakis First Responders and Alexandria Fire Department were called to the scene to help Osakis crews.

Osakis firefighters were on scene for 11 hours. Two cabins and a garage were destroyed and two nearby cabins were damaged. The cabins are located at the former Hoffman’s Hideaway Resort on Lake Osakis.

As of Monday there was no word on what caused the blaze. A state fire marshal was at the scene Sunday morning investigating and an official report is expected later this week.

Despite the loss of property, Mathews said he’s grateful everyone got out of the

burning structures.

“That’s always a huge relief,” Mathews said. “Anytime there’s a house fire, you hope everyone got out safely. This could have been much worse.”
