Quilts Along the Trail has been busy with patchwork the size of a theater – the size of the Empress Theatre.
In 2011, Quilts Along the Trail joined with master gardeners to begin a beautification project in downtown Osakis on Central Avenue next to AJ’s Restaurant, where the old Empress Theatre once flourished.
“The Empress Theatre became fragile and had to be torn down,” said Master Gardener Barb Wiegers.
The lot sat vacant for five years.
Now, mulch softens the walkway to cozy benches amid stone planters abloom with flowers and foliage. It is Wiegers’ hope that people will take advantage of the little oasis in Osakis by stopping by to appreciate the beauty around them or use the space for a scenic lunch venue.
Wiegers and Master Gardener Bernie Lentz endured the heat on Saturday, July 14 to serve refreshments and welcome visitors to the Osakis Community Garden’s grand opening.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Quilts Along the Trail is currently preparing for its September 8 event on the Central Lakes Trail in Osakis.
Antique and contemporary quilts will decorate a two-block long stretch while visitors enjoy entertainment, vendors, food and quilting activities.
Quilts of Valor will be featured at the event sponsored by Just Like Grandma’s, Community Vacuum and Sewing Center, Osakis Chamber of Commerce, Lake Osakis Resort Association, Galeon, Jacobs Lefse Bakeri and First National Bank of Osakis. For more information, call (320) 859-3618.
