Legion season ends with pair of losses in tourney

It was two and out for the Osakis Legion baseball team as they fell in the District 7 playoffs last week, ending their season.

Osakis faced eventual champion Eden Valley-Watkins in the first game of playoffs last Thursday, falling 7-1 as EVW peppered Osakis pitcher Jordan Frederick with 10 hits in the game.

Osakis’ lone run came in the fourth frame as Drew Fearing doubled to open the inning and cAME home as the Eden Valley-Watkins shortstop committed an error during Doug Zimmel’s plate appearance, putting Zimmel at second with no outs. Osakis was unable to bring home any other runs as the EVW pitcher coaxed a fly ball from Brandon Giesler, then struck out both Devin Waldvogel and Jordan Mack to end the inning.

Osakis was able to put together just two hits in the game – one each from Fearing and Zimmel.

NLS 6, Osakis 4

Osakis’ loss to EVW dropped the team into the loser’s bracket where they faced New London-Spicer on Saturday, falling 6-4 and ending their season.

New London-Spicer grabbed an early lead with three runs in the third, increasing that to 4-0 before Osakis found its way onto the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as Giesler and Waldvogel both scored.

NLS added two more runs in the top of the sixth, making it 6-2, but Osakis came back again with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Hunter Scheer reached base on an error with two outs, followed by a walk to Lane Berberich.

Frederick slapped a two-run single, eventually reaching third as Fearing singled and moved to second.

New London-Spicer shut down the rally as Zimmel hit into a ground out to end the inning.

NLS’ pitcher then struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Doug Zimmel took the loss as he went the distance for Osakis, giving up six runs on nine hits and four walks.
