Maxine Waldvogel, 84, Osakis, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
On June 2, 1927 a beautiful baby girl was born to Francis and Josephine (Lund) Hevern in Hillsboro, North Dakota. They named her Maxine Frances. As a teenage girl, Maxine moved with her family to the Osakis area. She worked as a waitress at area restaurants and then for Herberger’s Department Store, first in the grocery department and later doing retail sales.
On October 3, 1946 Maxine was united in marriage to a local farmer by the name of Minrad Waldvogel. For many years they lived and raised their family north of Osakis on the family farm. They retired in 1980 and moved into Osakis.
Maxine was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and belonged to both the Christian Mothers and the parish women’s organization. She was also an active member of the Osakis VFW and the Community Memorial Home Auxiliaries. In addition, Maxine joined a group of Red Hat Ladies who met regularly for social outings. Maxine had many special friends that took her to local events, to go play cards and to weekly bingo games.
Maxine had many talents and interests. She was an excellent cook who could serve her big family a delicious meal whenever they gathered. She loved to bake and always had cookies and treats on hand to spoil her grandkids with when they stopped for a visit. She had a green thumb and could often be found working out in her garden and flower beds. Over the years she canned many quarts of tomato juice, pickles and corn to share with her family.
One of Maxine’s favorite activities was dancing. Another thing she enjoyed was shopping trips with her girls and then stopping for her favorite cup of Caribou coffee. Maxine played many hours of cards each year, especially the games of Ten and a Half and Skit with her grandkids. It’s certain that Maxine was the happiest when her house was filled with family, grandkids and relatives.
She was a kind and caring mother, grandma and sister, who was still able to live in her own home and care for herself right up until her last days.
Maxine is survived by her children, Dale (Sandy) Waldvogel of Osakis, Dean (Jean) Waldvogel of Spring Lake Park, Judy (Robert) Brillhart of Woodbury, David (Deb) Waldvogel of Osakis, Karen Hogendorf of Circle Pines, twins, Timothy (Stephanie) Waldvogel of Lino Lakes and Thomas (Teresa) Waldvogel of White Bear Lake, Bruce (Debra) Waldvogel of Osakis; 27 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; brothers, Russell (Iva Mae) Hevern of Osakis, Jack (Vi) Hevern of Coon Rapids, Monty (Jennie) Hevern of Alexandria; sister, Molly Barber of Shoreview; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Minrad, in 2007; an infant son; and a granddaughter, Hayley Grace Waldvogel.
A Mass of Resurrection was held for Maxine on Monday, March 19 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis with Fr. Dick McGuire officiating. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Osakis. Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, the members of the Osakis VFW Auxiliary and the Christian Mothers. Active pallbearers were grandsons, Curtis, Joseph, Doug, Spencer, Jacob and Derek Waldvogel, Matthew Brillhart and Grant Hogendorf.
