“Quilts are a study in how to use whatever you have,” said Carol Mihalchick, who inspired the first Quilts Along the Trail event in Osakis almost a decade ago. Mihalchick and the Quilt Committee are busy now preparing for the ninth annual event on Saturday, September 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Osakis along the Central Lakes Trail.

A fundraiser for the Osakis Armed Forces Memorial was determined a great success by Osakis VFW Post Commander Mike Kral, citing a total of $8,600 raised in the event held Sunday, August 12. The funds were earned through donations at a bake sale, silent auction, live auction and sloppy joe luncheon, Kral said.

Every day was Grandparents Day when I was a kid. My family lived exactly a half block down Pollock Hill from Grandma and Grandpa Malcheski. We saw them every day, sometimes several times a day. I became the person I am today because of my close association with my Grandma. (I was her favorite, of course. The rest of the grandkids in town were boys, four of them, to be exact.)

Five new teachers and a new school district head bookkeeper are on staff at the Osakis Public Schools for the start of the new school year. They are Jennifer Halvorson, second grade long term substitute; Kate Hubert, learning disabilities teacher for grades 8-12; Tera Larson, Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) and pre-school instructor; Michael Rohr, K-3 elementary music; Victoria VanWatermulen, academic assistant in reading and math interventions for K-6; and head bookkeeper Theresa Moore

Last summer when I was spending time with my young granddaughter, the ice cream truck rolled down the street. We could hear the lilting, clearly recognizable music coming from the truck when it was a block or two away. Suddenly, I was a child again.
