A crowd of 60 people gathered at the Osakis George H. Elliott VFW Club on Monday, October 15 to welcome National President of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Leanne Lemley on her official visit to central Minnesota.
August 1 was the 5-year anniversary of the tragic I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis in which 13 people lost their lives and another 145 people were injured. This date in Minnesota history brings about concerns from the traveling public regarding the bridge inspection process that highway agencies are required to follow by state and federal law.

Bev Bales or Jerry Rapp?
That’s what the decision for Osakis area voters is now down to after last Tuesday’s primary election for the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.
Bales, the District 3 incumbent, received the most votes, 432, followed by Rapp with 318, Bert Pexsa with 161 and David Erickson with 49.
Bales and Rapp will square off in the general election on November 6.
Feedlot producers who have non-compliant feedlots are receiving technical assistance to bring their feedlot into compliance. The McKnight Foundation provided a grant to the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation Development (SWCD) in August 2010 to hire a feedlot technician to work within a 12-county area.
On July 24, the Sauk River Watershed District (SRWD) Board of Managers and the Citizen Advisory Committee, as well as district staff, met at an annual event to hear from state and local representatives on Sauk Lake concerns.
With the filing period now officially over, a total of 15 candidates are in the running for five Douglas County commissioner positions.

The district includes the townships of Miltona, Spruce Hill, Osakis, Orange, Carlos and Belle River, and the cities of Osakis, Miltona, Nelson and Carlos.
A renewal of the joint powers agreement between the Douglas County Jail and Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) was approved for 2013 at the May 8 county commissioners meeting.
The agreement with DOC allows the county to house inmates at the jail who are participating in the work release program – and make a profit while providing the service.
