Alexandria’s Matt Hoelscher has known he wanted to be a head coach since his days playing for former Cardinal boys’ basketball coach John Holsten at Jefferson High School.
Now at age 31, Hoelscher will get that chance after taking over as the head boys’ basketball coach in Osakis.
The Osakis girls’ basketball team held the Prairie Conference leaders to just 53 points last Friday night but couldn’t counter on offense in a 53-45 loss to Upsala.
The Silverstreaks trailed by just three at the break but the Cardinals kept them at an arm’s length down the stretch.
The Osakis boys’ basketball team was in position to snap a five-game skid last Friday night before a 40-point second half helped Staples-Motley to a 71-62 win over the Silverstreaks.
The Cardinals overcame a three-point deficit at the half by shooting an incredible 70 percent in the second half.
