Ice leaves Lake Osakis

Free at last.

The last sheets of ice on Lake Osakis melted away on April 1 — four days later than last year's March 27 date.

The winner of the Lake Osakis Ice Out Contest is Isaac Hetland of Osakis. He will receive a $50 gift certificate from The General Store, which sponsored the contest along with the Osakis Review. The gift certificate is good toward clothing or boots only at The General Store.

Hetland's guess was just one day off, which put him in a tie with three other guessers. A random drawing was held and he was the winner.

The 2017 ice out is 10 days earlier than 2015's April 11 date and nearly a month ahead of 2014's date of April 27.

The median ice-out date for the lake is April 19.

The earliest ice out was March 13, 1878 and the latest ice out was May 14, 1950.

According to the state climatology office, Lake Osakis has the longest running data in the state when it comes to recording ice out dates; records go back to 1867.
