UPDATE: Chase of Miltona man topped 100 mph

A 25-year-old Miltona man was arrested after leading officers on a pursuit in a stolen vehicle, reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour, according to the criminal complaint in the case.  

Tyler Scott Schmidtbauer was being held at the Otter Tail County Jail on charges of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.

On Monday, April 17, a 1996 green Chevy pickup was stolen from Miltona and was spotted in Parkers Prairie on Tuesday, April 18, by the woman who had reported it stolen. The woman called law enforcement dispatch and followed the vehicle until Ryan Brasel of the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office took over on Highway 29 near the intersection of Highway 210. After spotting the deputy, the driver took off at high speeds, leading deputies through Hewitt and into Staples.

In Staples, Brasel attempted use his vehicle to stop the pickup using a precision immobilization technique, also known as a PIT maneuver, to force the fleeing car to spin and stop.

His squad was damaged and the pickup was able to drive out of the ditch and continue on. The pursuit was then called off due to safety concerns.

However, a resident of Staples witnessed the truck and driver fleeing in a wooded area. Schmidtbauer was found and taken into custody. According to the complaint, he asked officers how much trouble he was in and if anyone had been hurt in the pursuit.

Also involved in the pursuit were the New York Mills Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Wadena County Sheriff’s Office, Todd County Sheriff’s Office and the Eagle Bend Police Department.

According to Minnesota court records, Schmidtbauer was convicted of felony theft of a firearm in 2015 in Todd County and a felony charge of fleeing an officer in 2013 in Wadena County.
