Zipping through his 70s
Don't tell 78-year-old Gordy "Gordo" Berthiaume of Osakis to act his age. He just might take to the skies to show his youthful, adventurous side.
Two years ago, the Osakis Review did a feature story on Berthiaume and 10 other Osakis residents who jumped out of a perfectly good plane for a tandem skydiving experience.
A couple of weeks ago, Berthiaume was at it again. This time, he ziplined over the Royal Gorge, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River, near Canon City, Colorado.
Berthiaume and his grandson from France, David Berggren, cruised over the narrow, steep gorge, which in places has a depth of 1,200 feet.
"To me, it was just another experience, just something to do," said Berthiaume. "But I think everyone else had fun watching us."
So, which activity did he like better? Berthiaume said the skydiving because it lasted longer.
"We got to freefall for about a mile," he said.
When he was asked what adventure awaits him next, Berthiaume said he wasn't sure because he's in "pretty rough shape right now."
He said his health wasn't the best and that doctors were trying to figure out exactly what was wrong.
Regardless of the outcome, Berthiaume laughed and said, "I'm still not acting my age."
