School enrollment dips slightly

Enrollment at the Osakis Public Schools on the first day of classes totaled 813 students, which is just five less than the opening day 2016-17 figure of 818.

The enrollment numbers were discussed at the Osakis School Board at its Monday, Sept. 11 6 p.m. regular meeting.

Supt. Randal Bergquist reported that by the last day of school for the 2016-17 year, the enrollment had dropped by 11 students to 807.

The numbers include the fact that there were 67 seniors graduated in June, and only 49 kindergarteners enrolled on Sept. 5 this year, which is a difference of 18 students.

Figures show that 27 new students moved into the district in the elementary school, and 15 students moved out, four of them out of state, leaving 11 moves within a 50 mile range.

In the high school, 13 students moved in, and 9 moved out of the district.

"Our numbers are up, compared to last year at the end of the year," Bergquist told the board, "but overall, our numbers might be a little bit down."

Records kept for the past 11 years show a low enrollment of 730 for the 2007-2008 school year. The highest enrollment for that same period was 867 students enrolled in the 2013-14 school year.

Largest class this year is the sixth grade, with 72 students. Smallest class this year is the kindergarten with 49 pupils.
