Remember When - 2007: Ellises celebrate 68th wedding anniversary

Leilin Hilde of rural Osakis helps others preserve memories through a craft called scrapbooking. She is one of eight Creative Memories top leaders pictured on the cover in the February issue of Empowering Women magazine, which features Hilde and the Creative Memories business.

Ellsworth Johnson has appealed a decision made in Seventh District Judicial Court regarding Todd County Road 55. Johnson's attorney filed a suit in January asking for a reversal of the Todd County Board's decision to vacate County Road 55.

Elizabeth "Betty" and James "Jim" Ellis of Osakis celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on Feb. 5. They drove with another couple to Las Vegas to get married in 1939.

Feb. 11, 1991

Brian Anderson won the 171 lb. division of the Prairie Conference Wrestling Tournament at Browerville and set a new record for career victories at Osakis High School. He carded his 106th victory, eclipsing the old record of 105 set by Jim Walter in 1983.

A malted-milk machine and an a la carte sandwich line will be tested for a month at the Osakis Schools. The new items are being considered because so many of the students leave the school and go downtown to buy lunch.

Aaron Johnson, an eighth grader, beat his younger sister, Stefanie, for the Osakis Spelling Bee championship by spelling "artillery" in the fourth round of the final competition.

Feb. 16, 1967

Fess Parker and Katy Jurado head the cast in "Smoky," a horse picture in color, to be shown at Empress Theatre. Parker breaks in a wild mustang, loses him and gains him back. It was filmed in the scenic mountain country of Mexico.

Gov. Harold LeVander has proclaimed the week of Feb. 12-18 in Minnesota as National Beauty Salon Week to recognize the cosmetologists for their fine sense of civic responsibility and their dedicated services to the grooming of women for greater beauty.

Harry's Supermarket is offering specials this week, including 10 Texas jumbo grapefruits for 39 cents, 2 pounds of chicken breasts for 99 cents, 3 pounds of pure honey for 89 cents and 1 gallon of Crisco oil for $2.29.

Feb. 15, 1917

Osakis friends of Bert H. Lamphear will be pleased to hear that he will move to Osakis to make his home, having decided to take charge of the mercantile business of his late father. He will be associated with his mother in conducting the business, which will be carried on as usual.

The Lake Street home of Teddy Harris was the scene of an enjoyable Valentine party last evening, given by a committee of boys composed of Teddy Harris, Earl Lowell and Truman Thompson.

The Catholic church at West Union burned to the ground last Sunday. Fire started in the basement of the big frame church and was caused by an overheated furnace. The blaze got into the wood partitions and gained headway so rapidly that it was impossible to extinguish the fire.
