Wrestling: Osakis finishes sixth in Melrose

The Osakis wrestling team got its season started over the weekend by taking sixth at the Melrose Early Bird Invitational on Friday.

The Silverstreaks put up 86.5 points. Bemidji won the tournament with 170, while Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (168) and Rocori (146) rounded out the top three.

Seniors Gage Zieske and Colton Waldvogel paved the way for the Silverstreaks by winning their brackets. Zieske took the title at 145 pounds. He won by tech fall in his opening match before winning a 5-2 decision in the semifinals. That matched him up against Jon Solum of Bemidji in the championship, where Zieske won 5-4.

Waldvogel's championship came at 170 pounds as he won all three of his matches by fall. He pinned Andover's Ryan Grant in the championship in 3 minutes, 38 seconds.

Triston Stoetzel finished fourth at 160 pounds after winning his opener by fall in 1:26. He fell in the semifinals and then dropped a 13-3 major decision in the third-place match against Bemidji's Chance Hinrichs. Carsten Jacobson got a fifth-place finish at 126 pounds for Osakis as he pinned Ben Millard in 4:18 in his final match.

Senior Jeran Baker also got a win for Osakis at heavyweight as he finished fourth in the bracket. Baker won his opener by fall in 35 seconds before dropping his next two matches by fall.

Kale Drevlow wrestled at 106 pounds for Osakis where he went 0-2 in contested matches and fell in the fifth-place match. Nathan Kulzer had the same result at 120 pounds, as did Duncan Vandergon at 138 pounds. Brock Faber rounded out Osakis' lineup by wrestling at 182 pounds, where he went 0-3 on the day.
