Boys basketball: Osakis can't quite catch Sauk Centre
The Osakis boys basketball team went back and forth with Sauk Centre on Thursday night, but the Mainstreeters held on in a 67-63 final on their home court.
"It was a fun game to be a part of as we had a lot of situations down the stretch that are tough to simulate in practice," Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. "As a coach, it becomes a chess match as you try to find the play, sub the right guys, and hope the other team makes a mistake, and we capitalize on it."
The Silverstreaks got off to a good start as junior guard Jonathan Lara knocked down two straight threes to get them going.
"Phil (Mathews) made some big shots in the first half," Hoelscher said. "We had great minutes from Riley (Werven), Phil, and Carter Rost off the bench. We missed some opportunities around the basket and when you play a big, physical team, those plays can come back and hurt you."
The Silverstreaks trailed by just one at the half but were outscored 37-34 after the break. Osakis shot 42 percent (24-57), led by Daniel Savageau's 28 points. Mathews added eight points and Luke Imdieke dished out a team-best eight assists.
"Sauk is tall, athletic and physical, and we got worn down for a four-minute stretch in the second half and couldn't do much offensively and gave up second chance points," Hoelscher said. "But overall, it was a well-played game by our guys."
Osakis (6-5, 3-0 Prairie Conference) has one more game this week when the Silverstreaks welcome in Brandon-Evansville (6-4) for a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
