Boys basketball: Second half carries Osakis past LPGE
It took a while for the Osakis boys basketball team to get going on Tuesday night, but the Silverstreaks eventually got a 59-46 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
Osakis (6-4, 3-0 Prairie Conference) trailed by five at halftime. The Silverstreaks then dominated the second half, outscoring the Thunder (4-5, 1-2 Prairie) 37-19.
“It was an ugly first half as we had too many turnovers, gave up too many good looks around the rim and had troubles hanging onto the basketball,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “We did a much better job the second half of not settling for threes and attacking the basket. Guys started cutting to the basket, and we found them for easy looks.”
Osakis shot 50 percent (20-of-40), including 7-of-18 from three. Sophomore guard Daniel Savageau had four of those triples on his way to 25 points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals. Senior forward Reid DeWenter was Osakis’ other player in double figures with 13 points to go along with five boards.
“Reid and Josh (Peterka) did a great rebounding down the stretch and Daniel and Reid made big shots at key moments to give us momentum,” Hoelscher said.
The Silverstreaks have two more games left on the schedule this week. They go to Sauk Centre on Thursday night at 7:30 to face the 6-5 Mainstreeters before Brandon-Evansville (5-4) comes to Osakis for a 3:30 p.m. game on Saturday.OSAKIS 22 37 - 59LPGE 27 19 - 46OSAKIS TOTALS - FG - 20-40; Three-point FG - 7-18; FT - 12-21; Assists - 12; Blocks - 3; Rebounds - 27; Steals - 8; Turnovers - 12OSAKIS - Luke Imdieke - 8 points, 3 assists, 4 rebounds; Jonathan Lara - 2 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals; Riley Werven - 2 rebounds; Daniel Savageau - 25 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals; Josh Peterka - 3 points, 2 blocks, 5 rebounds, 2 steals; Philip Mathews - 2 points; Brandon Boogaard - 5 points, 1 assist, 1 block, 3 rebounds; Carter Rost - 1 point, 2 rebounds; Reid DeWenter - 13 points, 2 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal
