Girls basketball: Timmerman’s buzzer beater secures Osakis win over Royals
The Osakis girls basketball team showed how far this group has come over the course of this season on Friday night as the Silverstreaks knocked off Royalton 56-55.
The Royals had defeated the Silverstreaks 68-43 earlier in the season, but things started to look a little different when Osakis built up a 38-23 lead in the first half.
Royalton fought back in the second half, taking a 53-50 lead. A couple defensive stops and a basket by senior Lauren Savageau made it 54-53 with one minute left on the clock. The fouling game began, keeping the game tight until the Silverstreaks had the ball on offense.
The Royals missed the front end of a 1-and-1 from the line with 18 seconds left. Osakis got the ball and had two looks at the basket before senior Bree Timmerman grabbed an offensive rebound. Timmerman put the ball back up and in at the buzzer for the game winner.
“This was such a huge win for the girls,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “With the way Royalton handled us the first time we met, I give the girls a ton of credit for the effort tonight and pulling out the win. What a great win for the team.”
Osakis put three players in double figures. Timmerman led the way with 18. Madi Johanson added 16 and Savageau finished with 14.
“Bree Timmerman hit big shots all night,” Kalpin said. “Madi Johanson had 16 points, 14 rebounds. Lauren Savageau had 14 hard-earned points and handled the ball versus their pressure all night. Tianna Stanek had a great defensive night, along with Ellie Clasemann. Alexa Lien, Sam Bray and Corinne Collins all had great performances off the bench. Just a great team win for us."
The Silverstreaks are now 8-9 overall and 5-1 in the Prairie Conference after starting the season 1-8. They have won three straight and seven of their last nine games. Royalton fell to 14-5 with the loss and 6-1 in the Prairie Conference.OSAKIS 38 18 - 56ROYALTON 23 22 - 55OSAKIS SCORING - Ellie Clasemann - 5; Lauren Savageau - 14; Tianna Stanek - 3; Bree Timmerman - 18; Madi Johanson - 16ROYALTON SCORING - Morgan Wagner - 9; Ashley Popp - 2; Jenna Carlson - 14; Macey Petron - 6; Cierra Gottwalt - 2; Allyson Waletski - 6; Emily Malikowski - 6; Jenna Anderson - 10
