Volleyball: Osakis knocks off second-seeded Swanville to advance

The Osakis and Swanville volleyball teams had met twice during the regular season with both teams taking one win in five sets.

On Friday with the stakes even higher, Osakis took care of business a lot sooner. The third-seeded Silverstreaks (11-17) swept the second-seeded Bulldogs (13-11) on the road to advance to the 5A-South semifinals against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (16-13) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Long Prairie.

“This was another amazing team effort,” Osakis head coach Kirsten Wessel said. “These girls are peaking at the right time. They are focused and ready to play. It's so fun to see so many girls shine each night. They are playing so unselfishly and playing like a true team since their communication has improved.”

Osakis got the early edge against Swanville with a tight 25-21 win in the opening set. The Silverstreaks took control from there, winning 25-15 in the second set and 25-16 in the third.

“We started a little slow, but about midway through the first game, we found our rhythm and never looked back,” Wessel said. “We played in some long, intense volleys and fought aggressively through every one. These girls did an outstanding job of not dwelling on mistakes. They moved on and played tough right away in the next play.”

The Silverstreaks served at 97.3 percent and had 14 aces. Maddie Johanson finished with a team-leading 10 kills. Tianna Stanek added seven and a team-high 12 digs. Harlie Falzone had five aces from the serving line, while Morgan Faber had a team-best 14 assists.

With two playoff wins now under their belt, the Silverstreaks will try to get a third on Tuesday with a trip to the subsection championship on the line.

“It was a fun night and every player contributed on the court,” Wessel said. “Even when they are not on the court playing, the bench has maintained a high level of enthusiasm for the team. That really helps carry us through some challenging moments. It helps us keep the momentum, and everyone knows that volleyball is a game of momentum.”
