Those planning to attend the Douglas County Fair this year may want to adjust their plans, as the four-day fair will run Wednesday through Saturday instead of Thursday through Sunday.
But the change is not set in stone for years to come, said Fair Board President Don Kleine.
“We thought we’d try it,” said Kleine. “Sunday can now be a tear-down day. We’ll see how it goes this year.”
Kleine explained that Sundays have been a challenge because people wouldn’t come to the fair until noon or later, and many vendors wanted to leave early. It was always a shorter day anyway, he said.
The fair board, he said, looked at the fair’s history and discovered that at one time the fair ran Wednesday through Saturday. Somewhere along the way, it changed to Thursday through Sunday.
Before making the change for this year, Kleine said, the board sorted through logistics including vendors, 4-H, rides and entertainment. He said the board wanted to make sure the new schedule would work with everyone before adopting the new dates.
Once it was determined that such a change was possible, the board approved the new schedule. The fair will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, and wrap up on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 10 p.m.
The fair will kick off with some great entertainment, said Kleine, as the Fabulous Armadillos will play Wednesday evening. Other acts include I Witness, Shane Martin Band, Tripwire and plenty of local musicians.
“We have lots of good entertainment this year that’s free once you pay admission to the fair,” he said.
Kleine said the Douglas County Fair is a fixture in this community with a rich history, with much of it listed on the Douglas County Fair website at www.dcmnfair.com.
“It is such a tradition for many people,” he said. “We get so excited to plan for it. The fair is about making memories to last a lifetime.”
