Get revved up for Roddin' Round the Lake
The streets of downtown Osakis will turn back the clock to an era filled with hot rods and gleaming vintage vehicles this Saturday, July 13 for the Roddin' Round the Lake Show-n-Shine car show.
The Central Lakes Cruzers of Osakis is hosting the event for the 28th year.
The club's president, Wane Karl, can remember when only Osakis and Duluth had car shows on the second weekend in July. These days, there are about 10, he said.
"There are a lot of car shows going on, but people from the Cities, Fergus Falls and other towns still come up here," Karl said. "We're pretty satisfied with the amount of cars we get, considering all the things out there that people can do."
Why is the event so successful?
"I guess it's the friendliness of the people in town and the car club," Karl said. "The atmosphere is always good here."
Roddin' Round the Lake activities will begin Friday, July 12 with a social night and customer appreciation feed from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Free pulled pork sandwiches, along with dessert, will be served at NAPA Auto Parts, 204 E. Nokomis St.
The Show-n-Shine on Main Street will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with registration and will continue until the awards ceremony at 2:15 p.m.
Karl expects about 130 cars to be registered "from the 1920s on up."
Entrance to the show is free and there is fun for the whole family. The club asks that visitors not bring animals or bicycles to avoid scratching the classic cars.
Many of the owners will be on hand to answer questions.
Doors for a celebrity auction at the Pollard Community Center will open at 9 a.m., followed by the auction at 10 a.m. Games for children will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.
Throughout the day, music by "Bullet Bob" DJ Entertainment will add to the nostalgic feel of the show.
The club will give out awards, sponsored by area businesses, at 2:15 p.m. After that, cars will cruise over to the Galeon parking lot so nursing home residents can take a look.
The Central Lakes Cruzers has 41 members, an impressive total for a smaller-sized town but Karl said there is always room for more. The club meets once a month. Anyone who is interested in joining can give Karl a call at 320-859-2887 or Wayne Triebenbach at 320-859-4326.
"We more than welcome anyone to join us," he said. "Even if you don't have a car, you can still be a member."
