When will the ice go away?
Tired of the snow, the cold, the howling winds and that annoying wintry mix?
Dream a little.
Guess when the ice will melt away on Lake Osakis. You might even win a prize.
Sponsored by the Osakis Review, the Osakis Area Chamber of Commerce and local businesses, the Lake Osakis Ice Out Contest 2019 is up and running.
The person who comes closest to the ice out date will win a $50 gift certificate from the Chamber of Commerce. In case of a tie, a random drawing will take place.
Entry forms are printed in the Osakis Review. Only one entry is allowed per person. Clip and send your registration blank to the Osakis Review, P.O. Box 5, Alexandria, MN 56308 or email your guess and contact information to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The deadline for entering is noon on Friday, April 5.
If history is any indication, the ice may not leave for another month. The median ice-out date for the lake is April 19.
Last spring, the ice finally left Lake Osakis on Saturday, May 5 — nine days shy of the latest ice-out date of May 14 recorded back in 1950. Last year's winner was Corinne Ort of North Mankato.
The 2018 ice-out was more than a month behind 2017's date of April 1 and 39 days later than 2016's March 27 ice-out.
The earliest ice out was March 13, 1878.
According to the state climatology office, Lake Osakis has the longest running data in the state when it comes to recording ice out dates; records go back to 1867.
