UPDATE: More details emerge in arrow shooting: Suspect is from Osakis/Alexandria area

An incident that started in Osakis and ended in Sauk Centre Thursday left a Stearns County deputy with a shot in the forearm by an arrow and the suspect with gunshots to the left shoulder, buttocks and hand.

The suspects is a 31-year-old man from the Osakis/Alexandria area.

According to a news release from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, here’s what happened:

The suspect stole a black pickup from Osakis and exited into Sauk Centre around 10 a.m. Sept. 13. He pulled into the John Deere parking lot and then ran into a building. The suspect then drove through multiple backyards and smashed into parked vehicles.

The sheriff’s office reported that the vehicle sped toward a residential neighborhood, smashing into a garage on 10th Street in Sauk Centre.

The man ran into a home through an unlocked door where law enforcement officials from the Stearns County Sheriff’s office, police departments from Sauk Centre, Melrose and Osakis, along with the Minnesota State Patrol, tried to clear the home.

At one point, the suspect shot Deputy Paul Orvis with a compound bow from the second floor of the home. He shot through the deputy’s left forearm with a target bow. The bow and arrow belonged to the homeowner.

Officers fired their weapons at the suspect, striking him more than once. It is unclear at this time who shot the suspect, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officer and negotiators from the SWAT team were able to get inside the home and began talking with the suspect as he moved from the downstairs to the upstairs. He reportedly told officers he had been shot and after nearly two hours, the man appeared from the top floor. He was tasered and then taken into custody.

The Sauk Centre Ambulance transported the man to the Sauk Centre Hospital where he was then airlifted by LifeLink III to the St. Cloud Hospital. As of Thursday afternoon, he was listed in good condition.

Deputy Orvis had surgery to remove the arrow shaft from his arm and was also treated for a possible broken arm. The incident will be investigated by the St. Cloud Police Department while the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will handle the shooting investigation. Search warrants and a crime scene investigation will be conducted, according to the sheriff’s office.

Although there was no immediate threat to the general public during the standoff, precautionary measures were taken. Homes were evacuated and Sauk Centre schools went into lockdown.

Multiple agencies assisted with the incident.
