Students throughout Douglas County were treated to extra milk during their lunches the first two Tuesdays in May.

Dubbed "Two Milk Tuesdays," the event was sponsored by the Douglas County American Dairy Association.

The association did a similar event a few years ago, but this year, it was for all schools throughout Douglas County, said Frank Klimek, chair of the Douglas County American Dairy Association.

Klimek said this year's Two Milk Tuesday took place on May 1 and 8. He also said that the association planned on spending roughly $2,600 for the two days for all the schools. At 22 cents per carton, that is a little more than 11,800 extra cartons of milk being provided to the students.

"We are trying to promote the importance of dairy," said Klimek. "There are probably some kids who don't have enough to drink for lunch."

Judy Thornbloom, the food service director for the Osakis School District, said the Two Milk Tuesday event was a big hit, especially for students in grades 4-12.

All together, on the first Two Milk Tuesday event, Thornbloom said the district gave out an estimated 400 extra milks.

"The junior and senior high students were excited about it," said Thornbloom, adding that it wasn't as big of hit with students in kindergarten through third grade.

Besides promoting dairy, Klimek said the association did the event because, "You just can't beat a good milk."
