Word of the day: safety
"Always wear your helmet every time you bike," Jake Capistrand, owner of Jake's Bikes, told the children at the Osakis Bike Rodeo and Safety Day Sunday, June 2. "I've seen more crashes in the last five years than ever before."
Safety was the word for the day at the seventh annual event organized by the Osakis Police Department with cooperation from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Jake's Bikes and North Ambulance. Local businesses also provided donations and support.
Children sharpened their bike riding skills by testing out five obstacle courses set up in the Osakis Public Schools south parking lot.
They maneuvered over boards and bean bags, around traffic cones and quickly stopped their bikes on a dime. They also practiced their hand signals and followed commands, such as "red light, green light."
Children brought their bikes in for a quick safety tune-up and had their tires filled to the proper pressure.
They also registered to win a bike and other prizes and received free bike helmets from North Ambulance.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office presented a K-9 demonstration.
