Football: Osakis aims for state berth
The Osakis football team is one step away from program history.
The Silverstreaks are playing in Friday’s Section 6AA championship against Pillager. With a win, Osakis would end a 13-year absence from the state tournament and return to the game’s highest stage. Now, only the Huskies stand in their way.
Pillager is ranked 14th in the QRF and is 9-1 on the season, the lone loss coming to Ottertail Central in week three. But even with the one blemish, the Huskies are outscoring opponents 39-14 on average. Osakis checks in at 18th in the QRF with its 8-2 record and an average margin of victory of 25-20.
The teams have two common opponents on the year in Wadena-Deer Creek and Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta. Pillager beat the Wolverines 38-8 and the Tigers 28-7, while Osakis defeated W-DC 55-12 and MACA 14-6.
The No.1-seeded Huskies opened their 6AA run with a 26-6 win over No. 8 Staples-Motley before its win over No. 4 MACA in the semifinals. The third-seeded Silverstreaks advanced through the other half of the bracket, beating No. 6 Wadena-Deer Creek in the opener before a 21-20 upset over No. 2 Breckenridge in the semifinals.
It all sets up Friday’s championship clash.
Pillager is returning to the Section 6AA title game for the third year in a row. Osakis is making its second appearance in the last three years, though this is its first in 6AA after a 5AA appearance in 2016.
The Silverstreaks last reached state in 2005 -- which came in Class A -- but they’re now four quarters from a long-awaited return. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.
