July 4, 1918
Old school house damaged by fire. Fire, which appears to have started in some old rubbish in one of the cloak rooms on the first floor of the old schoolhouse about midnight last night, did several hundred dollars worth of damage before the fremen were able to get the fire under control. When first discovered by Mr. Andrew Anderson, who lives next door, the interior of the big frame building was a mass of flames on the westside, and the volunteer fire company had to do some hustling to keep the flames confined to the first floor The damage is considerable, but it is said the building does have fire insurance coverage.
Former Osakis boy on casualty list. In the Sunday casualty list printed in Monday's dailies the name of Frederick J. Renn, Epping, ND appears among those boys killed in action in France. The young man is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Renn, former residents of Osakis township and very well known here.
Metcalf Corner to be model store. B. H. Lamphear and W. A. Yates returned Tuesday night from the cities where they spent several days ordering material for the rebuilding of the Metcalf block, recently gutted by fire and which has been bought by Mr. Lamphear and will be refitted for his merchandising business.

Plans set for Annual Achievement Day. A three-day business promotion is now being planned to go along with the annual Achievement Day, July 25-27. Thursday is Achievement Day. Friday is normally a big day in downtown Osakis, with the stores open in the evening. Saturday has been designated as Crazy Day.
Accident demolishes cars. A two-car accident demolished both cars on the night of June 28, when the two cars collided at the intersection of highway 52 and 127. The mishap occurred about 10 p.m. that evening. Several passengers and the drivers of the two vehicles received extensive and major injuries, but all were expected to recover.
Jon Haaven files for State Representative position. Jon Haaven, news director for KCMT-TV will officially enter the political arena tomorrow, Friday, when he files as a candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives. Haaven will be seeking the office seat in District 54-A which takes in all of Douglas County and 11 townships in southwestern Todd County.

Resorters busy raising docks. Lake Osakis resort owners are spending a lot of time this month raising their docks because of the heavy rainfall. Gary astlefore, owner of Mick's resort on Lake Osakis, commented, "The lake is coming up every day. We're all adjusting our docks. That's what I am going to do today." Friday marked the fourth time this season that Astleford has raised his docks.
Blacktopping is completed. Blacktopping of two city blocks and the Osakis Liquor Store-Visitor Center parking lots has been completed at the cost of $116,000. Starry Construction was the contractor.
Jack and Jill store in Western Days competition. Two mounted, masked robbers entered the First National Bank of Osakis, the Osakis Liquor Store and Jack and Jill Grocery Store Friday afternoon, surprising patrons, and boosting Oskis Jack and Jill's chances of winning the Western Days competition for the Jack & Jill Food Store Chain and Nash Finch stores. Western Days activities included the staff entering "Bum Steer" in the Osakis Festival Bed Races; decorating of the store, hosting a band, holding a Hoedown Feed at the store and many other fun events.

First Avenue construction begins. Pipe replacement started on Monday, July 7. The big trucks came to town, put up roadblocks and started ripping up an Osakis thoroughfare to begin Monday, July 7th. 1st Avenue East reconstruction project starts off by crews beginning to replace sanitary sewer and water lines that are more than 50 years old.
Car show shines in Osakis. The streets of Osakis were filled with memories on Saturday as the Roddin' round the Lake Car Show brought in cars from all over the state. Classic restorations and custom street rods dated all the way back to the early 1900s, giving everyone something to enjoy.
New law office opens in Osakis. Osakis Law Office offers Osakis area residents access to a lawyer right in Osakis. With three independent attorneys working together they offer a full range of legal services. Because of this, there should typically be a lawyer in thoun, although clients are encouraged to make an appointment so they can connect with the lawyer who best meets his or her needs.
