100 Years Ago

August 22, 1918

Idlewilde ball. One of the prettiest dancing parties of the season was the Red Cross Ball given by Mine Host and Mrs. E. R. Ruggles at the Hotel Idlewilde dining room on Monday evening. The local Red Cross netted $125 through the kindness of the Idlewilde Hotel Management. Socially, the affair was a splendid success.

3,666 bushels of seed corn. The University of Minnesota Department of Agriculture, is calling on every county in the state to make September 10-20 its Seed Corn Week. The plan is to select enough seed corn during this period to supply seed for the coming two years. The Farm Bureau of every county, in cooperation with the county agent, is to make a vigorous effort to persuade every farmer in the state to select one bushel for every three acres. On this basis Douglas County should select 3,666 bushels.

August 22, 1968

Public school to open. The Osakis public school will open for a new fall term on Wednesday morning, Aug. 28. A workshop for all teachers will be held Aug. 26-27.

Three Todd County girls to model at state fair. The Minnesota State Fair 4-H Dress Revue will give three Todd County girls a chance to model their winning garments and gain experience in the world of fashion. They are Barbara Lunemann of the Eagle Valley Eagles, Annella Johnson, Peppy Peppers and Barbara Anderson, Sod Busters 4-H clubs. They were selected from 61 blue ribbon winners taking part in the Dress Revue at the Todd County Fair.

Movies coming to Empress Theatre. Aug. 22, 23 and 24 the feature will be "The Gnome Mobile" A sprightly Disney comedy-fantasy starring Walter Brennan and Ed Wynn. The feature film for Aug. 25, 26 and 27 is "In the Heat of the Night" a murder mystery set in the deep south, starring Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier, suggested for mature audiences.

August 24, 1993

Association working to improve lake. Improvement of the water quality on Lake Osakis is the number one goal of the Lake Osakis Association. Members outline three main steps to be taken to help clean up the water: all septic systems should be inspected and brought up to code, reduction of erosion and nutrient runoff from lawns and vegetation control and alterations.

Motorcycle crash claims two lives. A traffic accident on the evening of Aug. 16 claimed the lives of two Blaine, Minn., residents. A Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by 34-year-old David Wallace went out of control on a curve and struck an oncoming car driven by 22-year-old Todd Michel of rural Osakis. Melissa Schumacher, 28, passenger on the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria from severe head injuries. Wallace was taken to the hospital and later transferred to the Hennepin County Medical Center where he died on Aug. 18, also from head injuries. Neither was wearing a helmet. Michels was not injured in the crash.

Merchant snares top honors in men's golf tourney. Despite torrential rains, golfers at the Osakis Men's Club Golf Tourney were in good spirits Sunday. Forty-one golfers participated in the 36-hole, two-day tournament. Tony Merchant claimed top honors in the championship flight with a 153.

Karl dominates Thunder Cars at I-94. Osakis' Dustin Karl picked up another win in the Thunder cars feature. He dominated the event on Saturday, Aug. 9. Finishing first in the heat race before taking the checkered flag in the feature.

First National Bank of Osakis announces quarterly youth winner. Colman Cody, of Osakis was the Grand Prize Winner of The First National Bank of Osakis Quarterly Youth Saver Winners.

Fair offered hands on fun for kids. Ben Reilly, age 2, got face to face with a donkey at the Douglas County Fair on Thursday. He is the son of Brendan and Sara Reilly of Osakis. Early indications show that fair turnout was very high, thanks to pleasant weather throughout the weekend.
