Nov. 28, 1918

Notice to Farmers. Farmers can now exchange flour for wheat as the ruling requiring substitutes is repealed. For a short time, the Osakis Milling Co. will expect to have a good supply of mill feed on hand and suggest you purchase what you need now. You may call the Osakis Milling Co. at 3542 for more information.

Basket Social. The east Sauk Valley Branch of the Red Cross will give a Basket Social at the home of F. M. Kee Saturday evening, Dec. 7. Girls are requested to bring baskets with lunch for two and the boys a well-filled purse.

Ad: Ladies over-shoes on sale. One lot of $1.35 and $1.50 values, first quality, low over-shoe style, no buckle, all sizes from 3 to 6 and a half. 48 pair in this lot. While they last, per pair, now only 98 cents. Herberger-Cruse Co.

Nov. 28, 1968

Talent contest. The Christmas time amateur contest returns to the local scene this year for the first time in about eight years. For many years, this amateur program was held as a part of the Christmas season but had been dropped for some reason, eight years ago. The event will be held at the public school auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 14, beginning at 1:20 p.m.

VFW seeks items for Vietnam distribution. A special Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary program "medication for Hope" was recently launched by the Department of Minnesota. Each Post and auxiliary has worked with doctors, dentists, druggists and people in the community collecting such articles as braces, toothpaste and brushes, vitamins, soap and non-prescription drugs to be used in emergency hospitals set up in South Vietnam to treat the injured and help those suffering from disease and malnutrition.

Stores closed Thanksgiving Day. All stores of the village will be closed on Thursday of this week so that merchants and their employees can join in the observance of Thanksgiving. The stores will be open until 9 p.m., Friday for the shopping convenience of patrons.

Nov. 30, 1993

Osakis Creamery reports banner year. The Osakis Creamery Association increased its sales by more than $67,000 in 1993 to exceed the record set in 1992 of slightly more than $16.4 million.

Teachers attend MEA event. Five Osakis teachers attended sessions in the Little Falls Sept. 29 annual Mid-Minnesota Uniserv Fall Drive-in. This MEA sponsored event included sessions on stress, teaching language through themes, competency based graduation rules, team building and many more.

Stay off the ice. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Enforcement Division warns all Minnesota residents to stay off of the ice, at least for the time being. Streams and rivers are especially hazardous. The DNR's official position is that ice is never 100 percent safe.

Donations to be tripled. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Minnesota Food-Share and Lutheran congregations across Minnesota are partnering to raise money for food shelves during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. This year, Thrivent Financial is adding a special incentive to the effort. Local food shelves will receive $1 for every $3 they raise, up to a total donation of $80,000 from Thrivent Financial.

Have your children been naughty or nice? Local children can plead their case or simply share a hug with the man in the red suit at Osakis Santa Day, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Osakis VFW. Along with talking to Santa and getting their picture taken, they can decorate pictures, frost cookies, make reindeer food, decorate stockings and take free trolley rides.

A home for the holidays? Dogs and cats, and even a pot-bellied pig, were excited to receive attention at the Lakes Area Humane Society's holiday open house that took place on Saturday Nov. 22. The "Home 4 the Holidays" event helps to place animals during the holiday season. LAHS is working with more than 2, 500 shelters in placing one million pets in loving homes during the holiday season.
