Osakis Voices: It's spring cleaning time

Chad Gulbranson

Spring is right around the corner and it is that time of year to start thinking about spring cleaning our homes, garages, and properties.

The City of Osakis will be holding its annual citywide Clean-Up Day on Saturday, May 11 this year. The event will be held at the Osakis Municipal Liquor Store parking lot beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 11 a.m. As in the past, all general junk will be accepted from the City of Osakis residents at no charge. A free-will donation for the general junk will be accepted and those funds are put towards the 2019 Fourth of July Fireworks. Again this year, the Fourth of July Fireworks will be put on by the Osakis Fire Department members at the Osakis Country Club at dusk. This is a fantastic show for all residents and visitors to enjoy.

The citywide cleanup not only accepts general junk but many additional items, including appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, hot water heaters and other items such as tires, televisions, microwaves and computers. Items other than the general junk do have additional fees for their disposal. Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management will be taking hazardous waste again this year and they accept those items from anyone. More information can be found on the city website at www.cityofosakis.com, the City of Osakis and the Osakis Police Department Facebook pages. In April, a citywide clean-up flyer along with the residential letters will be mailed to everyone in city limits. Also watch for more information in the Osakis Review.

The Osakis Police Department officers will again be offering assistance to any city residents that are unable to get their items to the Osakis Municipal Liquor Store parking lot the day of the cleanup. Those residents are encouraged to contact City Hall at 302-859-2150 to be put on a list for pickup before May 9. A few days will be needed to organize the pickups and collect the required fees for any additional items other than the general junk. But remember, a free-will donation for the general junk goes to support our local fireworks show!

This is also the time of the year that residents are getting outside and noticing unsightly areas in the city. These areas are either next door or down the block and residents do make calls to the city and police departments with their concerns. Osakis residents are urged to take advantage of the citywide Clean-Up Day and take care of any nuisance areas they may have.

After the citywide Clean-Up Day, there may be properties with nuisance violations. The Osakis Police Department will again be cracking down on those nuisance properties that fail to comply with city ordinances. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your property or someone else's please feel free to call the Osakis Police Department at 320-859-2550 and we will be happy to assist you. There is a form on the city website for reporting nuisance properties that can be filled out and either dropped off at city hall in the drop box or mailed to the city at P.O. Box 486, 14 Nokomis St E, Osakis, MN 56360.

The citywide Clean-Up Day has been very successful in the past years with the help from West Central Sanitation, Osakis Lions Club and Todd County Sentence to Serve.
