The Osakis girls basketball team had just one game last week due to weather cancelling school for three days, but it proved to be a big one for the Silverstreaks as they snapped a 10-game losing streak with one of their better games of the season.
Osakis hosted 6-12 Melrose out of Section 6AA and stymied the Dutchmen in a 51-42 final.
“This was a great win for our team,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “With the week out of school and not much practice, I thought the girls played with a lot of energy. We were able to get some offense going early in the game, and the girls executed well and took care of the ball. Defensively, we were able to take away their strengths. The girls adjusted well as the game went on.”
The two teams were tied 21-21 at the half, and Osakis fell behind by four points early after the break. The Silverstreaks responded by putting up 31 second-half points to create some distance.
“In the end, we had to make defensive stops, get rebounds and make free throws, which is what we did to close out the win,” Kalpin said. “It was a fun game for the team and was great to see the girls earn a hard-fought win."
Osakis shot 16-of-44 (36.3 percent) overall but got hot from three. The Silverstreaks were 10-of-23 from beyond the arc. Five of those triples came from freshman guard Alexis Johanson as she finished with a full line of 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block. Senior guard Tianna Stanek knocked down two threes and finished with 16 points and five rebounds.
“Tianna Stanek played well on both ends of the court,” Kalpin said. “She was given a tough defensive task and offensively hit some big shots down the stretch. Alexis Johanson had key baskets to help us build our lead.”
Kalpin liked the contributions he got from girls up and down the lineup. Junior forward Madisen Johanson had a team-high eight rebounds.
“Madi did a nice job of controlling the paint and getting key rebounds for us,” Kalpin said. “Alexa Lien controlled the ball and set up the offense all night with two key free-throw makes to help extend the lead. The play of Elli Clasemann, Lauren Scherr, Grace Oeltjen and Abby Randall was also key in the win. They all played really hard and were key in contributing to this win. Overall, a great team win for us."
The Silverstreaks now sit at 3-15 on the season. They are at Royalton (11-6) on Tuesday night at 7 before Browerville-Eagle Valley (4-13) comes to Osakis at 7 on Friday night.
