Baseball: Osakis Legion opens with 4-2 win

Reid DeWenter

The Osakis Legion baseball team kicked off the summer season on the right foot last Thursday, June 7, with a 4-2 home win over Glenwood.

Carter Rost tossed a complete game for the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out nine.

"Carter was on his game, especially early in the game, allowing one hit and tallying seven strikeouts through the first four innings alone," head coach Bill Infanger said. "That allowed us to get a lead, relax and play confident."

Rost's effort opened the door for Osakis to keep the lead after they grabbed it early. Luke Imdieke singled his way to first, then completed his trip around the bases off two Glenwood errors and a fielder's choice.

Imdieke followed a similar blueprint in the third, singling and later scoring on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead.

"Luke picked up where he left off in the high school season," Infanger said. "He does a great job as our leadoff hitter of finding his way on base and working his way around to score."

Glenwood answered back with a run in the top of the fifth, cutting the deficit in half, but Reid DeWenter plated a pair with a two-RBI double a half inning later. Both Logan Hartshorn and Rost came in to score on the hit, making for a 4-1 game.

And although Glenwood tacked on a run in the seventh, a string of three straight hits didn't do enough damage as Osakis held on for the 4-2 win.

"This was a great way to start the summer off," Infanger said. "We played well on defense, Carter threw well for us and we got the big, timely hit that we needed from Reid in the fifth inning to break it open a little bit. We should gain confidence from this win against a good Glenwood team."

Osakis was scheduled to return to the diamond on Monday, June 11, to play Wheaton. They'll be back in action at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14, to host Morris.
