Baseball: Osakis moves to 2-0

Isaac Froemming

The Osakis baseball field still wasn’t quite playable on Tuesday evening, but the Silverstreaks were ready to go again as they moved the game to Upsala and came back with an 8-3 win.

It was the second straight game where Osakis got timely hitting, good pitching and quality defense to improve to 2-0.

“A nice start to the conference season today,” head coach Shad Schmidt said. “Once again, our pitching was solid along with our defense for the most part. Our guys had great at-bats and hit the ball hard even on outs. I was really happy with the way the guys kept their composure after making some loud outs early and not getting rewarded until late in the game when we broke through a little bit.”

The Silverstreaks scored two in the top of the first, highlighted by Isaac Froemming driving in Carter Rost on a two-out hit. They added two more in the fourth behind back-to-back doubles from Froemming and Mason Moore.

Osakis then opened the game up with a four-run top of the seventh. Senior Logan Hartshorn had a two-run double ahead of an RBI-double from Rost. Luke Staloch then singled in Rost to put the finishing touches on the win. Eight different guys in all collected hits for Osakis.

“We got contribution from everyone, and it was nice to see freshman Bauer Klimek have some success in his first career varsity game,” Schmidt said. “The attitude and effort of the team right now is where it needs to be, and I am proud of this team for staying focused on our goals despite the weather and uncertainty of when and where we are going to play.”

Rost started on the mound and struck out eight with no runs allowed in five innings. Hunter Infanger threw the final two innings and allowed three runs, only one of which was earned.

“I would have liked to see us finish the game a little cleaner, but as long as we learn from that and continue to improve, we will be in good shape,” Schmidt said. “I need to mention the importance of Hartshorn being able to slow down the run game of other teams so far by throwing out 4-of-4 would-be base stealers.”

Osakis is now scheduled to be at Minnewaska at 4:30 p.m. on Friday if a snowstorm in the forecast for Thursday does not put a damper on those plans.
