The Osakis baseball team ran into another good program in a Section 6AA matchup on Monday night and dropped its first game of the season in a 6-4 loss to Foley.
The Silverstreaks (4-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Isaac Froemming, Carter Rost, Mason Moore and Bauer Klimek all drove in lone runs in the game, but a five-run bottom of the fourth helped Foley escape with a win.
The Falcons did their damage that frame with a single and a double being the only two hits as Osakis helped them out with three walks, two hit batters and an error.
“For the most part, we played a good game,” Osakis head coach Shad Schmidt said. “We out-hit Foley, we had fewer errors, but ultimately we lost the strike zone there in one inning and it cost us. Foley is a good team. In fact, one of the best in our section and a top-10 team in the state. They are loaded with upperclassmen who when given an inch, they take advantage, so give credit to them, as well.”
The Silverstreaks tried to rally from a 6-2 deficit with single runs in the sixth and seventh. Rost drove in Logan Hartshorn after Hartshorn doubled in the sixth, and Luke Imdieke scored on a wild pitch in the seventh. Their run came up just short when Foley got the final out it needed with Osakis stranding two runners in scoring position in the final frame.
“Anytime we have given up runs this year so far it’s when we don’t throw strikes,” Schmidt said. “As we keep working and improving, that’s one thing we have to do better is not have the one inning in the middle of a game where we lose ourselves.”
Rost started on the mound and took the loss in 3 1/3 innings of work. He allowed just one hit, but hit four batters and walked four in allowing all six runs, three of which were earned. Rost and Hartshorn each had two hits at the plate as Osakis tallied eight hits total.
“We learned from this and will move on and focus on Browerville,” Schmidt said. “We are a good team that could be better once we clean a few things up. Luke (Imdieke) did a nice job coming in and settling things down on the mound for us. We kept battling right to the end and gave ourselves a chance. Our guys don’t quit and take a lot of pride in what they do.”
The Silverstreaks will try to bounce back with a game at Browerville on Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
