Baseball: Osakis drops nailbiter to 15-1 Pierz

Luke Imdieke

The Osakis baseball team continues to prove it can compete with the best teams in the Section 6AA field. The hope for the Silverstreaks is that close games will turn more in their favor during the postseason.

Osakis is 12-3 now after a 2-1 loss on Friday to Pierz (15-1). Those three losses have come by a combined four runs to three of the top teams in the section after also dropping close games to Foley and Albany.

“We had a chance to win against a very good top-10 team in state tonight,” Osakis head coach Shad Schmidt said. “We out-hit them, had less errors and pitched well. The difference is we didn't get the big hit when we needed it.”

The Silverstreaks had runners in scoring position in the first, second, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Their only run came in the bottom of the seventh when Luke Imdieke got a hit that drove in pinch runner Austin Lennes.

Osakis had two runners on with the one-run deficit, but Pierz got a strikeout to end it. The Pioneers’ two runs came in the second inning on an RBI base hit and an Osakis error.

“We were not able to put any of our hits together,” Schmidt said. “Also, their outfielders were able to run under some well hit balls and throw a runner out at the plate in sixth.”

Junior Hunter Infanger gave Osakis every chance to win from the mound. He went all seven innings, allowing just one earned run on a walk and three hits. He struck out four.

“We played well and have nothing to hang our heads about,” Schmidt said. “I guess if we are going to lose to the top-tier teams in our section it rather be now then when playoffs start.”
