Boys basketball: Second-half propels Osakis to 17th straight win

Carter Rost

The Osakis boys basketball team has let teams stick around through one half at times this season but has always found a way to close things out through a now 17-0 start.

That’s what happened on Monday night. The Silverstreaks led by just six at the half but put up 44 points after the break to wrap up a 66-43 win over Browerville-Eagle Valley (10-9, 4-3 Prairie Conference).

“See-saw battle tonight as we strung together a good five minutes in the second half to extend our lead,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “We still have some rust to shake off from last week, and it showed early as we missed free throws and baskets around the rim.”

The Silverstreaks shot at a 46-percent clip from the field (24-52). Kobie Lara led the way with 12 points and six rebounds. Daniel Savageau had 11 points, while Brandon Boogaard returned from a sickness that kept him out of the last game to score 10 points and grab six boards.

Nine players scored in all for the Silverstreaks. Carter Rost was perfect from the field (4-for-4) on his way to nine points, and Carter Grove had seven points and a team-high five assists. That was enough to put away the Tigers to remain perfect in the Prairie Conference at 8-0.

“Browerville is very physical and scrappy, and if you're not ready to play from the tip, they'll surprise you,” Hoelscher said. “We finally got it going in the second half as all guys pitched in with scoring. It was nice to see the balance we had tonight, which is something we really haven't had before.”

Osakis will host Battle Lake (5-10) tonight, Tuesday, before going to Staples-Motley (1-15) on Friday night. Both games start at approximately 7:15.
