Girls basketball: Osakis falls after fast start against Royalton
The Osakis girls basketball team is measuring progress by more than just wins and losses this season, and head coach Pat Kalpin saw growth in a 62-52 loss at Royalton on Tuesday.
The Silverstreaks (3-16) and Royals (12-6) played on Dec. 13, and Royalton dominated that one in a 70-44 final. Things were much closer in the rematch.
“The girls really competed hard tonight,” Kalpin said. “From the first time we played before Christmas to now, we've shown tremendous growth. The girls came out from the start, moved the ball and hit shots and built a nine-point lead. Defensively early, we were good. Our crutch was our defensive rebounding. We gave up way too many second-chance points. Against good teams, that usually is the deciding factor between winning and losing games.”
The Silverstreaks hit 11 threes and put three players in double figures. Alexis Johanson led the way with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Tianna Stanek added 12 points and four rebounds, while Madisen Johanson finished with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
“I applaud our effort tonight against a good team,” Kalpin said. “With only a couple weeks left in the season, we need to strive to get better at the little things, which will make a big difference in a positive way for the team.”
