Boys basketball: Osakis will welcome in Melrose at 23-0 after BBE win
The Osakis boys basketball team will head into its much-anticipated Monday night showdown with Melrose at 23-0 after taking care of a good Class A team in Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Friday night.
The Jaguars (13-10) pushed the Silverstreaks in the second half, outscoring them by one, but the damage was done in the first half when Osakis built a 36-22 lead by the break. That held up for a 60-47 win.
“Great playoff atmosphere as the crowd was energetic and both teams were going back and forth the first eight minutes of the first half,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “We had to play fundamental defense, as BBE is so good at setting back screens and moving without the basketball. They put a lot of pressure on teams with their shooting ability, strength and athleticism. I’m proud of the way our guys dug in on the defensive end and stayed patient on offense.”
Osakis shot 48 percent overall (24-49) and knocked down 6-of-17 threes. Daniel Savageau had a team-high 18 points to go with six assists, three rebounds and two steals. Balance took over from there as seven different players scored at least five points.
“Our guards did a nice job penetrating and finding (Carter) Rost and Kobie (Lara) in the low post,” Hoelscher said. “Great team effort during a grueling three-game week.”
Osakis has another three-game week coming up. It starts with that 7:15 p.m. game in Osakis against Melrose (19-4). The Silverstreaks welcome in St. John’s Prep (5-13) on Feb. 26 and then Swanville (5-16) to wrap up the regular season on March 1.
