The Osakis boys basketball team has done a good job of putting teams away down the stretch over a now 2-0 start during its opening week.
The Silverstreaks closed out Eden Valley-Watkins in a 10-point game on Dec. 3. Two days later, it was Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (0-1) that stuck around for a bit before Osakis put the clamps down on a 67-45 win.
“It was a game of a lot of emotions the first half as both teams went on multiple runs and we couldn't extend our lead for long periods of time,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “We started out great, but BBE did a great job offensively by taking advantage of our guys over playing and not communicating on defense. They were scrappy and out-hustled us at times, and we gave up too good of looks.”
Things calmed down after halftime. Osakis’ defense gave up just 20 points, and the Silverstreaks extended their lead out.
“We did a much better job the second half by not fouling and guarding shooters,” Hoelscher said. “Offensively, we attacked the basket and found open slashers. We pushed the tempo in the full court and crashed the offensive glass for some put backs. I like the way we are playing offensively, but we need to do a better job defensively as a unit to make a run down the stretch.”
Senior Daniel Savageau showed why he is one of the top guards in the area again with 30 points on 11-of-23 shooting to go with nine rebounds. He was 6-of-10 from three. Sophomore Bauer Klimek added nine points, and Kobie Lara and Luke Staloch each finished with seven. The Silverstreaks got the win without senior starting guard Luke Imdieke, who is playing at the Minnesota Vikings Football Showcase, an all-star game on Dec. 7 that features many of the top seniors from all class levels around Minnesota.
