The Osakis girls basketball team ended its week with a dramatic first win of the season on Dec. 6 after edging Upsala in a 56-55 final.

“This was an exciting win for the team,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “The game went back and forth all night, with neither team leading by more than five points. The energy the girls had all night was great. Keys to us winning this game were taking care of the basketball and offensive flow. We did a nice job of sharing the ball with balanced scoring. Defensively, we did a nice job of working hard to take away their strengths.”

The Cardinals (0-3) had a big night from senior Laura Lange with a game-high 26 points, but the Silverstreaks had a little more depth.

Three Osakis players finished in double figures with Alexis Johanson leading the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Mara VanNyhuis added 13 points and five rebounds, and Alexa Lien had 10 points. Maddie Johanson also grabbed 11 boards and dished out four assists, while chipping in five points.

“It came down to some key plays late in the game for us to secure the win,” Kalpin said. “Mara VanNyhuis and Grace Oeltjen had huge baskets late in the game. Alexis Johanson hit a big three to give us the lead back, plus a late free throw to give us a four-point lead with eight seconds left. Alexa Lien and Maddie Johanson both hit big free throws when Upsala had to foul late in the game.”

The Silverstreaks shot 31.1% from the field (19-61), but they also held Upsala to 35% shooting. Osakis had three more points than the Cardinals from the free throw line by going 11-of-15 from the stripe.

“In tight games like this, so many little things have to fall into place and they did that tonight,” Kalpin said. “A great win and confidence boost for the girls.”
