The Melrose boys basketball team has been a thorn in the side of Osakis in recent years, which is why Thursday’s win for the Silverstreaks meant a little more early in the season.
The Dutchmen (4-2) are the defending Section 6AA champions, but Osakis edged them on the road in a 60-57 final by shooting 50% and overcoming a five-point halftime deficit.
“I’m so proud of how our guys battled tonight in a tough environment against a team that has had our number over the years,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said.
The Silverstreaks put up 36 points after halftime and got big plays throughout the lineup. Daniel Savageau did what he has done all season with 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Fellow senior guard Carter Grove knocked down 3-of-5 threes on his way to 12 points, while Luke Staloch and Kobie Lara each had seven points and Luke Imdieke added six to round out the scoring.
“Grove and Staloch made some big plays throughout the game by hitting some threes that forced them to stretch out their defense,” Hoelscher said. “That allowed open driving lanes for Daniel and Luke, and when those two have space and attack downhill, they are tough to defend. Kobie and Brady Mages did a great job defending (junior forward Rowan) Nelson, as that is not an easy task.”
Nelson had just nine points. Junior guard Grant Moscho led Melrose with 16, and Mason Heidgerkin added 13.
The win was potentially a big one as it pertains to section seeding. It’s early, but Osakis is now 3-0 against 6AA opponents. The Silverstreaks (6-0) are currently second in the QRF through Minnesota-scores.com behind only Annandale (4-0) in the 18-team field.
“So many guys made momentum plays in big moments on both ends of the floor,” Hoelscher said. “Our fans and players were fantastic, and I'm so happy for our guys as this is the first time they have beat Melrose. We are happy with the outcome, but we know the road to the state tournament still goes through them.”
The Silverstreaks, ranked 10th in the Dec. 18 Class AA polls, will face another top-10 team before the Christmas break when Class A’s eighth-ranked West Central Area (4-0) comes to Osakis tonight, Friday, for a 7:15 p.m. tip.
