The Osakis boys basketball team played 23 games before it suffered its first loss of last year’s season. This year, the Silverstreaks hit their first bump in the road much earlier.
The Albany Huskies (6-1) beat Osakis 57-53 at St. John’s University in the Granite City Classic in a match-up of two of the top teams in the Section 6AA field.
The Silverstreaks played without their leading scorer Daniel Savageau, who suffered an injury during Saturday night’s win over Rocori. Despite being short-handed, Osakis gave Albany all it could handle.
“It was a great battle throughout the game as guys stepped up with Daniel being out,” head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “We had a well-balanced offense, which is what we will need in the playoffs as multiple players will have to score for us to make a run in the section.”
Osakis’ bigs led the way on Saturday. Brady Mages had a team-leading 14 points. Kobie Lara has 12 points and five rebounds. Luke Staloch turned in a good game with 10 points and two steals.
“We ran into foul trouble in the first half,” Hoelscher said. “That set us back a bit, but we did a nice job of mixing up our defenses to slow them down. This was a great weekend for us as we got to play some tough competition. We played on the floor that the playoffs are on to get us ready for March.”
Osakis is 8-1 on the season and will host Staples-Motley on Thursday night (2-4).
