The Osakis girls basketball team (3-6) won a close game against Minnewaska (6-5) on Jan. 3 and almost got another win against a winning team before falling 51-48 against Barnesville (7-5) on Tuesday night.

The Silverstreaks led 25-17 at the half, but the Trojans rallied over the final 18 minutes. They outscored Osakis 34-23 after halftime to secure the three-point win.

“A fun, competitive game for the girls tonight,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “We came out strong, hitting early shots and taking an early lead. I thought the girls played good defense, rebounded well and took care of the ball. I was pleased with the looks we got on the offensive end. We need to continue to play aggressive attacking the basket when the opportunity is there. Unfortunately, the shots didn't fall for us tonight with those opportunities.”

The Silverstreaks took 15 more shots than the Trojans, but hit on just 30.2% of those. That included a 4-of-24 night from three. Barnesville shot 37.5% from the field, hit six triples and three more free throws than Osakis.

“Key possessions late were key for both teams,” Kalpin said. “Barnesville did a little more in the end to pull off the win. These are games that we learn from and take away the little things that could have been done better. We had to foul late in the game, which put them up by three. We still had a chance to tie the game, but a missed 3-pointer that ended the game.”

Alexis and Maddie Johanson each had a game-high 16 points for Osakis. Maddie added nine rebounds, and Mara VanNyhuis chipped in nine points, six rebounds and three assists.

Sydney Strand and Emily Bredman were the Trojans’ two players in double figures with 14 and 12, respectively.

“Although it was a loss, we are happy with the effort on both ends of the court and will use this to help our team get better,” Kalpin said.
