The Osakis girls basketball team took a step in the right direction this week after wrapping up a second straight easy win on Thursday night.

The Silverstreaks (5-7) dominated Swanville in a 71-29 game after taking care of Paynesville 62-30 on Jan. 14.

“The girls played a complete game tonight,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said of beating Swanville. “I thought we defended well, took care of the ball and had great offensive possessions. It was fun to see the girls work hard together. We were able to use our depth to pick them up full court, keep our legs fresh and stay out of foul trouble.”

Osakis’ defense frustrated an opponent for the second straight game as the Silverstreaks held the Bulldogs (4-8) to just 23.8% shooting (10-42).

“We have stressed defensively always staying in a stance, moving with the ball and reacting,” Kalpin said. “We showed all of that tonight. Offensively, we had great balanced scoring, distributed the ball well, got points in the paint and hit open shots. Again, all things that we have been stressing in practice.”

Osakis shot 52.8% (28-53), including 7-of-19 from three. They had assists on 20 of those field goals and also turned the ball over just 13 times, compared to 25 turnovers for Swanville.

“Individually, Hayleigh Niehoff had a great game,” Kalpin said. “She came in and hit shots and defended well to provide an early spark for the team. I felt that was what really got us going in the game.”

Niehoff had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Alexis Johanson had a game-high 20 points, while Abby Randall had nine and Grace Oeltjen had eight in a game where nine different players scored.

“Alexis Johanson had a season high in scoring, getting into a rhythm for us,” Kalpin said. “Mara VanNyhuis, Grace Oeltjen, Maddie Johanson, Alex Lien, Haylee Jern, Abby Randall and Tessa Stanek all had great floor games. Defending well, rebounding and scoring. Just an overall well-balanced game for the girls."
