The Osakis girls basketball team has stuck right with opponents in almost every game the second half of the season, and that was the case again on Thursday.
Now the Silverstreaks are trying to find ways to win those close games with the playoffs up next.
Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (14-12) had a little bit more in a 46-43 game that wrapped up the regular season for the Silverstreaks (11-15). Of Osakis’ last four losses, three of those have come by six points or less.
“This was an evenly-matched game,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “Both teams played with a lot of energy and worked really hard. We were able to build an early lead, but KMS fought back and took a two-point lead into the half. We had a nice stretch in the second half, going on a 12-0 run to take an eight-point lead early in the half. Some missed opportunities on the offensive end for us allowed them back into the game.”
Neither team could pull away as both defenses limited the offenses. The Silverstreaks shot 34% (16-47), and the Fighting Saints shot 33.3% (16-48).
Alexis Johanson had a team-high 17 points for Osakis, and Maddie Johanson added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Madison Rohner led KMS with 17 points, and Morgan Lesteberg was the team’s second player in double figures with 10.
“Down the stretch, we weren't able to hit the shots needed to keep the lead,” Kalpin said. “I was really happy with our defensive effort again. We rebounded well and made them work really hard offensively. This team has made great strides all year long and should be proud of what they have accomplished. We will take that into section play next week and get them prepared for what's ahead."
The Section 6AA Tournament will start on Feb. 27 with the high seed hosting in the 16-team field. The Silverstreaks are ranked as the No. 12 seed in the field through the QRF on Minnesota-scores.net. The section will officially be seeded on Feb. 22.
