Osakis senior guard Daniel Savageau has made big games a common occurrence over the course of his career, but Thursday’s performance against Upsala stands out even for him.

Savageau exploded for 45 points on 17-of-31 shooting overall in the 77-56 win over the Cardinals. He connected on 8-of-12 threes and went 3-of-4 from the free throw line to secure the new Osakis single-game scoring record. Stuart Lang had the previous record of 43 points, and that high scoring night had stood for 29 years.

“Daniel continued to shoot well and ended up breaking a school record for most points in a game,” head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “It was great to see the bench and crowd cheering for him as he was getting closer. It couldn't happen to a better kid. He has spent a lot of time at open gyms since he was young, and you can see how his dedication has carried over to on-the-court play.”

Savageau controlled the game from every aspect. In addition to his scoring, he had a team-high six assists, grabbed nine rebounds and collected five steals.

The win for Osakis (22-2) was its first of three straight road games to finish the regular season.

The Cardinals (9-16) could not keep up with the Silverstreaks offensively, as Osakis shot 46% overall (31-66), including 11-of-25 from three.

Luke Imdieke returned from a sickness that kept him out on Tuesday night by hitting three triples and finishing with 13 points.

“It was a back-and-forth first half as Upsala did a nice job of breaking our press and finding gaps in our zone,” Hoelscher said. “They made some shots by exposing our help defense and kept us on our heels. Luke and Daniel did a nice job of attacking on offense and hitting from behind the arch. We finally got both ends of the floor going in the second half as we made adjustments defensively and were able to get steals and turn them into layups.”

Kobie Lara had a team-best 12 rebounds and five steals for Osakis. Luke Staloch added seven points, as well.

The win moved Osakis to 9-0 in the Prairie Conference and the Silverstreaks have already wrapped up the conference title for the fourth straight year. Both Browerville-Eagle Valley (13-8) and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (8-14) are 6-3 in the Prairie Conference with one league game left on the schedule.

Osakis is at LPGE on Feb. 28. The Silverstreaks play out of conference on Feb. 24 as they head to Grove City to face Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.
