Osakis native Alayna Eldred has been a regular in the Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club over the years.
She won the Women’s Division as a young player in 2014 when she beat Glenwood’s Jenna Janu in 20 holes. At this year’s tournament, she advanced into the women’s quarterfinals before her run at a title came to an end.
Eldred qualified as the sixth seed out of 16 entries when she shot a 78 during the only stroke play round of the tournament. Things moved to match play from there, and Eldred’s run ended when Detroit Lakes native Madison Herzog won a 4-3 match on Aug. 1.
Herzog, a sophomore at North Dakota State University, used a strong back nine to beat Eldred.
Herzog was up just one at the turn, but her birdie win on No. 11 gave her some momentum.
She never wavered from there. Herzog’s par win at 13 created some separation and then a birdie win at 14 gave her all the cushion she needed to seal the deal one hole later when both players parred.
Eldred’s win in the match-play portion of the tournament came against Alexandria Cardinals golfer, Ciara O’Connor.
Eldred rallied back from a two-hole deficit at the turn and didn’t lose a hole on the back nine to preserve a 1-up win.
O’Connor took the first two holes with par but Eldred quickly recovered in dramatic fashion – with an eagle on No. 3. After halving the next two holes, O’Connor regained her two-hole lead with a par on No. 6 and went 3-up with a birdie on No. 8. Eldred answered with a par win on No. 9. O’Connor wasn’t able to win a hole after that.
Eldred, meanwhile, won No. 11 with par to get within one and tied the match on the next hole with a par. From there, the match settled into a staring contest, with neither golfer blinking. They halved the next five holes before Eldred broke through with a birdie win on No. 18.
Eldred will be a sophomore this coming school year as she soon heads back to the University of Minnesota for her second season with the Gophers.
