Track and field: Osakis flexes muscle in the Prairie again

The Osakis track and field programs have been the class of the Prairie Conference, and that’s how things look again this spring after the first meet of the season.

Prairie Conference teams went to St. John’s University for an indoor meet on Friday, and the Silverstreaks dominated both the boys and girls competitions. The girls posted 126.33 points, well in front of second-place Long Prairie-Grey Eagle at 77.5. The boys had even more separation, posting 159 points, while Royalton was second with 80.5.

“I feel good about the way the team is preparing in practice,” head coach Lee VanNyhuis said. “The kids show up energized and ready to work each day and it showed during the meet. The kids are just hungry to compete. The upperclassmen have been setting the tone.”

Osakis’ depth was on display in almost every event with multiple top-five finishes up and down the lineup.

The boys competition started with Luke Goodwin taking second in the 55-meter dash before Goodwin took second in the 200-meter dash (25.78), right behind teammate Xavier Pahl in first in 25.72 seconds. It was part of a good day for Pahl after he added a win in the 400-meter dash in 57 seconds.

Wins kept coming for Osakis in the 55-meter hurdles as Ryan Milhausen won in 10.07 seconds. The 4x200 (1:45) and 4x400 (3:55) relay teams both won their races.

In the jumps, Jacob Wielenberg set the tone in the high jump by clearing 5-feet, 8-inches for the win. Daniel Savageau took the long jump (17-08.5), and Ben Paulson rounded out the boys’ winners by throwing 42-feet, 2-inches to take the shot put by almost three feet.

“Our girls have been strong for quite a while now,” VanNyhuis said. “I feel our boys team is getting to that same level with the momentum that has been building in the program the past few years. With that being said, competing for conference titles will be one of our goals every year.”

The Osakis girls were equally as dominant as the boys. They took a 1-2-3 finish in the 55-meter dash from Tessa Stanek (7.46), Tianna Stanek (7.53) and Makenzie Lien (7.78). The Stanek sisters were right next to each other in the 400 dash, as well, as Tessa won in 1:06 and Tianna was second at 1:07.

Kaylee Thompson won the high jump by clearing 4-feet, 10 inches to match Justine Meyer of St. John’s Prep. Tessa Stanek won the long jump with a mark of 15-00.50, and Tianna Stanek won the pole vault after clearing eight feet to wrap up a big day for both sisters.

“I know that we have a long way to go to reach some of our goals,” VanNyhuis said. “We don't put a lot of focus on points this time of year. More on the work we put in during practice. I hope to be a lot better in a month and a half when the conference championships come. I'm sure the other schools feel the same.”

If the weather cooperates, Osakis’ next meet will be outdoors. The Silverstreaks are scheduled to go to Minnewaska for an invite on April 4 that starts at 4 p.m.
